About Jaffa
Jaffa is an ancient port city on the Mediterranean coast of Israel, now part of Tel Aviv. With a history spanning over 4,000 years, it's one of the oldest ports in the world. Today, Jaffa is a vibrant district known for its historic old town, artistic atmosphere, and beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea.
Historical Context
Jaffa is one of the world's oldest ports, with archaeological evidence dating back to 1800 BCE. The city is mentioned in ancient Egyptian letters and in the Bible as the port from which Jonah set sail before being swallowed by a whale. Throughout history, Jaffa has been ruled by numerous empires including the Egyptians, Phoenicians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Romans, Arabs, Crusaders, Mamluks, and Ottomans. In modern times, Jaffa was incorporated into Tel Aviv in 1950, creating the unified city of Tel Aviv-Yafo. The old city has been carefully restored, transforming from a neglected area into a thriving artistic and cultural hub while preserving its historical charm.
