About Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv is a vibrant coastal city on the Mediterranean Sea, known for its stunning beaches, world-class culinary scene, and dynamic nightlife. Often called "The City That Never Sleeps," Tel Aviv is Israel's cultural and commercial heart, renowned for its Bauhaus architecture, innovative tech startups, and liberal atmosphere. The city offers a perfect blend of relaxed beach life, rich history, and contemporary urban experiences.

Historical Context

Tel Aviv is a relatively young city, founded in 1909 as a suburb of the ancient port city of Jaffa. The city was established by 66 Jewish families who held a lottery on the sand dunes to distribute plots of land, forming a neighborhood they called Ahuzat Bayit, which later became Tel Aviv. The name "Tel Aviv" combines "tel" (an archaeological site of ancient ruins) with "aviv" (spring), symbolizing the renewal of ancient Jewish settlement. In the 1930s, German Jewish architects who fled Nazi persecution brought Bauhaus-style architecture to the city, creating what is now known as the "White City" - a UNESCO World Heritage site with over 4,000 Bauhaus buildings. After Israel's independence in 1948, Tel Aviv grew rapidly, absorbing immigrants from around the world. In 1950, Tel Aviv merged with Jaffa to become Tel Aviv-Yafo. Today, it represents Israel's economic and technological hub, hosting numerous startups and earning the nickname "Silicon Wadi." Despite its modern character, Tel Aviv preserves its historical roots while embracing innovation and diversity.
